The Housing Choice Voucher program gives eligible families the opportunity to rent from a private landlord. The participant’s rental amount is calculated based upon anticipated gross household income. The family pays up to 40% of their household income as rent and is responsible for the full Security Deposit.

Public Housing Eligibility

Some factors in determining eligibility are:

1. annual gross anticipated income
2. familial status, including citizenship or eligible immigration status

The Newark Housing Authority does both a credit and criminal background check with applicants to determine eligibility.

To Apply

NHA accepts preliminary applications by telephone or in person. Applicants are welcome to apply when the waiting list is open. It is advertised in the News Journal, in the classified section under “Public Notice.”

The application includes basis information about the head of household and family members, for example, names, address, date of birth, all household income.
